Keeping Kids Calm

I have an assistant and we are both very strict. The boys have to come in to the studio quietly.

Set rules and expectations

They have an individually assigned place in the room that they go to each week.

Then we work on some contemporary dance technique. A lot of it involves travelling on the diagonal. Runs, jumps, skips. We always have a couple of goals. Currently two of our goals are hamstring stretches and barrel jumps.

The next part of the class is structured improvisation. The very end of the class is a running game.

It lasts for about 5 minutes but they really look forward to it and it’s a reward for their hard work. One of my aims is for them to leave the class having expended a lot of energy.I think part of the secret is not to give them time to think, just keep them moving all the time. They are a great group of boys and are learning lots of good skills. The boys are aged from between 7 and 10 years old and there are about 10 in the class. It’s not financially lucrative but is one of my favourite classes in the week to teach. I hope that’s helpful.
